onetwentyeight presents “The Spirit of Cities" by Aleksejs Naumovs, the Rector of the Art Academy of Latvia (AAL), Kristaps Zarins, the Vice-Rector of the AAL, and Jacek J. Kolasinski, the Chair of the Art and Art History Department at Florida International University (FIU), which showcases paintings and 3D printed objects.

The exhibition "The Spirit of Cities" is a part of art project "World Cities. Live Paintings" which has taken place in several world metropolises – the artists have painted and exhibited their works in Delhi, Washington, D.C., Miami, Hong Kong, Abu Dhabi, New York, Paris, Venice, Burano, Budapest, Vienna, Riga, and many others. The art project is joined by more and more artists, and this time, along with large scale paintings by Aleksejs Naumovs and Kristaps Zarins, artworks by Jacek J. Kolasinski are displayed.

The common subject of the artworks is the spirit of the city. The works exhibited reflect the impressions which have been gained at the world metropolises and culturally rich European cities. The exhibition is constantly supplemented by painting new cities and sites. The artists don't make sketches or photos while painting; therefore, the artworks, made in alla prima technique, convey the gist of the urban landscape – visually, emotionally, and semantically. The showcased art works question the beholder – does the spirit of the city lies in the architectonic structures, fuss and movement or color combinations? What allows us to recognize a specific city? What constitutes a mental image of a city we have never been to?

In turn, Jacek J. Kolasinski's artworks are cityscape models – collages that are created after the artist's journeys. The artist usually takes photos while traveling, and afterwards he, using 3D printing, creates the models of cities – his own personal cityscapes that are just like materialized memories – fragmentary, selective, idealized, and restructured according to the artist's conception.

In the collaboration with the artist Jacek J. Kolasinski, the exhibition "The Spirit of Cities" and the art project "World Cities. Live Paintings" have gained a new form and conceptual content; and this time the interaction between the artists' creative work is of much greater importance. One of the ways, how artists deal with theencounter of analog and digital media, is by representing three dimensional artworks in two dimensional surface – painting.

As in other art project "World Cities. Live Paintings" events, plein air workshops, led by Aleksejs Naumovs, Kristaps Zarins and with participation of Jacek J. Kolasinski and art students, takes place in New York. The newly made art works are included in the exhibition.

In 2014, the AAL and FIU signed a memorandum of cooperation for years 2014/2021 that foresees collaboration in BA and MA programs, including student and academic staff exchange. Starting from study year 2015/2016, the AAL and FIU implement mutual mobility program in the framework of "Erasmus+".

The exhibition in New York is curated by Marina Goldena. The exhibition is organized by the AAL and FIU.
